To enroll in a SIME course, students must either be admitted to a degree (master's or doctoral program) or be a non-matriculated student. Being admitted as a non-matriculated student is faster than applying to a graduate program. The graduate school allows 15 hours of credit pursued as a non-matriculated student to apply toward a degree program. Thus, many students begin their master's academic journey as non-matriculated student.  A non-matriculated application is typically processed in less than a week.

Typical reasons that students apply as a non-matriculated student are:

  • The student decided to start taking classes after the master's degree application deadline.
  • The student wants knowledge from a couple of courses or to earn a certificate.
  • The students wants to waive the need to take the INCOSE Knowledge Exam through courses.
  • The student is trying to decide if the U is where they plan to pursue their education.
  • The student does not qualify for admittance to a degree program (lack of a STEM degree or an undergraduate career GPA < 3.0). Through demonstrated success in graduate courses, the student may prove their capability and eventually become admitted to their desired program.

The non-matriculated application process is different for the on-campus and online programs. General information can be found at non-matriculated graduate information.  For on-campus, non-matriculated courses, please email the Director of Systems Engineering or the Director of Engineering Management with your interest.  Follow the application link below.

On-Campus Non-Matriculated (Non-Degree Seeking) Application

For a fully online experience, follow the link below for non-matriculation with the UOnline Campus.  Students will apply as a UOnline student pursuing the GCEM or GCSE (certificates).  This will allow you to connect with our advisors and take courses that may apply toward a certificate, INCOSE or ultimately an MS degree. If you wish to eventually earn an MSSE or MEM, you should apply for the GCSE or GCEM, respectively.
