Students wanting to take a few classes are cateroized by the U as a non-matriculated student. There are numerous reasons to enroll as a nonmatriculated student. Some of the most prevelant are:
- The student decided to start taking classes after the master's degree application deadline.
- The student wants knowledge from a couple of courses or to earn a certificate.
- The students wants to waive the need to take the INCOSE Knowledge Exam through courses.
- The student is trying to decide if the U is where they plan to pursue their education.
- The student does not qualify for admittance to a degree program (lack of a STEM degree or an undergraduate career GPA < 3.0). Through demonstrated success in graduate courses, the student may prove their capability and eventually become admitted to their desired program.
The U wants every student to have a graduate advisor and a program director. So the U forces students that want to take a few SIME classes to apply for either the GCEM or GCSE. Just because a student applies, that does not imply that the student needs to finish. This is just the mechanism that the U uses to enable enrollment in SIME classes.
The SIME faculty want students to be prepared. The student should examine the prerequisites of the class that they want to take. Prerequisite coursework required
- One year of calculus
- One semester of statistics
- One semester of computer coding is encouraged, but not required.
- Note: See courses/advising web page for classes that help students master this prerequisite material.
- International students need to demonstrate English proficiency. See the Mechanical Engineering website for detailed requirements.
Deadlines
- Fall Semester: August 7
- Spring Semester: December 15
- Summer Semester: May 1
Applying to Take a Course (or Two)
Unlike an application to a graduate program, this application is simple and does not require letters of recommendation or an application fee. It only requires a brief description of why you think you are prepared to pass the classes and earn the certificate, plus a personal statement. You should apply to a certificate, but may intend to only take one or two classes with us.
The non-matriculated application process is different for the on-campus and online programs. General information can be found at non-matriculated graduate information. For on-campus, non-matriculated courses, please email the Director of Systems Engineering or the Director of Engineering Management with your interest. Follow the application link below.
Non-Matriculated (Non-Degree Seeking) Application
- Apply through the Graduate School
- Select Certificate Student Application
- Select GCSE or GCEM
- Select Main Campus or UOnline
- Work with the advisor to enroll in course(s)
Requirements for Awarding GCSE
Please fill this out when you are in your final semester of Systems Engineering Graduate Certificate courses so we can notify the Graduation Office to award and mail your certificate (be sure your CIS address is accurate).
- Complete the required 15 hours of courses with a grade of B or higher in every course.
- Fill out the GCSE completion form in the semester that the certificate is to be awarded.
This form must be filled out after the semester starts and before finals week.
To get your name in the Spring Commencement Program, the form must be filled out prior to Feb. 15.
Completion Form: Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering
Requirements for Awarding GCEM
In the semester that you wish to be awarded the GCEM fill out the following form. This form must be filled out at least a week before finals week.
Completion Form: Graduate Certificate in Engineering Management
Earn a grad of B or better in all courses used for the GCEM. This will be checked by the Director of Engineering Management Programs after grades are posted in the awarding semester.
