To allow students to prove their current academic capability, all certificates have minimal admissions requirements. To be awarded a certficate, a student needs to be able to earn a B or better in the required core and elective classes. Thus, students need to be prepared to do well in SIME classes. The following list provides the suggested prerequisite knowledge for most SIME classes.
Suggested knowledge
- One year of calculus
- One semester of probability or statistics
- One semester of computer coding is encouraged, but not required.
- International students need to demonstrate English proficiency. See the Mechanical Engineering website for detailed requirements.
- See courses/advising web page for classes that help students master this prerequisite material.
Deadlines
- Fall Semester: August 1
- Spring Semester: December 15
- Summer Semester: May 1
If you are already admitted to the U and pursuing a bachelors, masters or Ph.D., you can earn a SIME certificate by taking and doing well in the appropriate classes. Here is how to apply.
Undergraduate Certificate in Systems Engineering is only available to BS/BA degree-seeking students at the U. Since all U students are eligible, it has no application. Undergraduate students should apply to be awarded the certificate during the semester in which they are completing their last course required to earn the certificate.
Graduate Certificates are available to all currently enrolled graduate degree seeking students at the U. Students may apply to our graduate certificates through one of the two simple departmental webforms with no fees (links below). All applicants should have taken a year of calculus and a semester of probability or statistics.
Graduate certificates can be earned without being admitted to a master's or Ph.D. program. Unlike an application to a graduate program, this application is simple and does not require letters of recommendation or an application fee. It only requires a brief description of why you think you are prepared to pass the classes and earn the certificate, plus a personal statement.
The SIME faculty generally believe that knowledge is gained throughout life. The standalone graduate certificates provide individuals with the ability to prove their current academic capabilities. Furthermore, the U wants individuals that only want to take a class or two to have an advisor and director. Therefore, students just wanting to take a class or two are also directed to apply for a graduate certificate even if there is no intention of ever earning the certificate.
