The University of Utah has firm requirements about "double counting" courses for two degrees.  However, the Concurrent BS/MS programs allow for this "double counting."  The SIME groups offers a

Concurrent Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering/ Masters of Engineering Management
Concurrent Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering/ Masters of Science in Systems Engieering

Both programs follow similar rule.  Students pursuing the BS in Mechanical Engineering can apply up to 6 hours of courses from their graduate program to satisfy up to 6 hours of tech electives for the BSME degree.  This typically saves 6 hours of courses and effectively makes the MSSE/MEM only require 8 additional courses (24 hours).  Thus, the majority of students can finish their masters degree with one additional year of study beyond when their BSME degree would have been awarded.

Ideally students wishing to pursue this pathway should discuss with the director of the program during the last semester of their junior year.  The senior year typically intermixes graduate and undergraduate courses in both semesters.  It is still possible to take advantage of this program even in the BSME graduating semester, but the student may not receive the full 6 hour benefit.

The concurrent pathway requires continuous enrollment.  Furthermore, the student is confferred two degrees, the BSME and either the MEM or MSSE in the exact same semester.  No student will be awarded a masters degree without satisfying all requirements for the BS degree. Students wishing to exit the concurrent program can apply qualified coursework toward the traditional BSME degree.

The U requires the student to be either exclusively a graduate or an undergraduate student. Students should carefully decide when to move from an undergradaute student to a graduate student.   A student is eligible graduate funding and the Tuition Benefit Program administered by the Graduate School only after switching to become a graduate student.  Scholarships, federal aid and full-time student status can all be impacted when switching from an undergradaute to a graduate student. So please talk to people before haphazardly switching to a gradaute student.

Program Requirements

To be accepted into the BS/MS Program, students must meet the following requirements:

Under the BS/MS option, students may take graduate courses (suggested one per semester) in their undergraduate senior year. Students should consult with their undergraduate advisor about scheduling needs to complete the BS degree and to make room for one grad course per semester. These two courses (6 credits) should be pre-approved and flagged by the Graduate Advisor.
